My issue ended up being that my leaky "sealed-for-life" transmission ultimately produced the "Limited gears available" fault, and I needed a new transmission pan and oil. Part is Transmission Pan With Filter And Gasket: LR3, LR4, Range Rover. -oh'six rover ( Strutracks.com)
If you go back to park or turn off the vehicle and then select Drive it will start in 1st as expected. It acts almost as if the transmission is not getting the signal to shift. Also, the air suspension is staying at the lowest setting. I have a very basic OBDll reader and was able to pull U0001 & U0101.
The box seems to be changing up through all the gears ok ( sometimes a bit slow changing up) but main problem is once in top gear the revs stay high. It used to always feel it had changed up another gear when the revs dropped down but it's not doing it anymore. Checked level of oil and all good with no burnt smell.
